EU Moves Forward with Drafting Montenegro’s Accession Treaty

(MENAFN) The European Union has reached an agreement among its member states to start preparing the accession treaty for Montenegro, according to the EU Enlargement Commissioner Marta Kos.

In a statement shared on the social media platform X, Kos said that “Today, Member States decided to start drafting Montenegro’s EU Accession Treaty,” highlighting what she described as a significant development in the country’s EU path.

She added that “Montenegro’s place inside the EU is now taking shape,” calling the decision “a major step on the path to EU membership.” According to her, the move reflects “a clear recognition of Montenegro’s progress, and an encouragement to accelerate reforms.”

Kos also noted that the process could help the EU strengthen its enlargement framework, stating that it “also offers a chance to draw lessons from past enlargements and include new and stronger safeguards in future accession treaties to prevent backsliding.”

European Council President Antonio Costa also expressed support for the development, describing it as an important advancement toward Montenegro joining the bloc. In a post on X, he said, “Congratulations to Montenegro – today we took a big step towards your accession to the European Union.”

He further emphasized that the creation of a working group tasked with drafting the treaty is “a key milestone,” adding, “For the first time since 2013, the EU starts the clock for the next enlargement.”

The drafting of an accession treaty represents a crucial phase in the EU enlargement process, as it establishes the legal and institutional conditions required for a country to become a member.
